Bills in Congress that will Divert Public School Funds

This is an urgent matter brought to us by our National PTA.

A series of pro-voucher bills have been introduced in the U.S. Congress in 2014. The bills recently introduced are picking up Congressional support and would be devastating to public education funding. Combined – they would divert nearly all federal education funding to school vouchers. The Alexander bill is particularly alarming, as Senator Alexander serves as the top Republican Ranking Member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee that has jurisdiction over federal education policy.

National PTA opposes any private school choice proposal and/or voucher system that diverts public funds to private or sectarian schools. Here is a link to several positions by National PTA – especially note statement under “School Choice”:

Here are some talking points:

Vouchers divert money from public schools (where 90 percent of all school-age children are enrolled) to private schools (where the public has no oversight into how those public dollars are spent), while doing nothing to improve public education.
Vouchers will not ensure parental “choice.” Private and religious schools may deny applications for enrollment for any reason. The “choice” in “choice programs” lies with private school administrators, not with parents.
There is no strong evidence that voucher programs improve student achievement.
When provided the opportunity to comment on vouchers, Americans have consistently rejected them.
